Questions

Gymnastics team FAQ

What is the difference between Xcel, Compulsory and Optional gymnastics?

Xcel (ages 6+) is a more flexible USA Gymnastics competitive program with four divisions: Bronze practices 2 nights a week, and Silver, Gold and Platinum/Diamond practice 3 nights a week. Compulsory (Levels 3–5, 8–18 hours a week) competes set routines with a mid-level, year-round commitment. Optional (Levels 6–10, 18–20 hours a week) is our high-level, year-round program.

How does my child join the gymnastics team?

Girls ages 4 and up with prior gymnastics experience can try out. We test flexibility, strength and basic skills on each event, and a coach talks with parents about the results and a placement recommendation. Xcel and Compulsory gymnasts can also join on a coach's recommendation.

What is Pre-Team and how do kids get invited?

Pre-Team is our invite-only developmental program for ages 3–7: Mini Tops (3–4), Mini Hopes (4–5) and Mini Elites (5–7). Gymnasts are invited after time in our recreational classes (3, 5 or 6+ months depending on the group), followed by a parent interview.

How many hours a week do team gymnasts train?

It depends on the program: Mini Tops trains once a week for 55 minutes, Mini Hopes and Mini Elites twice a week, Xcel 2–3 nights a week depending on division, Compulsory 8–18 hours a week and Optional 18–20 hours a week.

My gymnast already competes. How do we transfer?

Gymnasts looking to join at Levels 3–9 or Xcel Silver through Diamond should email us at liberoathleticcenter@gmail.com and we will set up an evaluation.

Is Hope Gymnastics Academy a USA Gymnastics program?
